Drawing Project 3 – Light/Shading Study

Shading Study

“Still Life” March 2024

Medium: charcoal pencil #2, #4, #6, soft vine charcoal, and precision eraser on 18″ x 24″ drawing paper

Several random objects were arranged on a large piece of black fabric for our class to draw. We could choose any angle to draw from and could draw whichever items appealed to us; we were not expected to draw them all. By trying to avoid having too much negative space in my drawing, I ended up drawing most of the items. I began by lightly shading the entire page with vine charcoal and gently rubbing the paper with a paper towel to obtain a soft gray background. I then used the vine charcoal and a precision eraser to sketch the items. Charcoal pencils and the precision eraser were then used for shading and lightening the items to give value. The project helped me see/draw how light falls across objects.
