Completed on 10/28/24 during the Fall semester. The objective was to understand color mixing using a color wheel. Four elements representing nature were used: trees for hues, birds for tints, leaves for tones, and feathers for shades.
This project allowed for the exploration of color blending using acrylic paints. The colors used were titanium white, bone black, phthalo blue, Quinacridone Magenta, and Benzimidazolone yellow medium on Strathmore Bristol smooth paper.
Reflections/Analysis
Project 4 – Color Wheel Assignment
1. You should have used your color wheel (found in supply list) to complete the project. How do your hues and their tints, tones, and shades compare with this wheel and can each area be clearly identified? why or why not?
I believe my hues, tints, tones, and shades are darker than the color wheel. Some colors, like reds and yellows, are pretty close. The other colors, the blues and greens, do not match the color wheel because they are too dark. I believe the colors would have matched better if I had used ultramarine blue instead of phthalo blue (green shade).
2. How did you use creativity in your wheel design? What shapes did you use and why? How do the shapes relate to each other?
To create my shapes, I drew each one, then cut them out and tried to space them evenly by drawing around each shape within the framed color boundaries of the wheel. For this project, I chose a tree, a bird, a leaf, and a feather. I chose these shapes because every morning, when I look out my window, that is the first thing I see. They are related to my love for nature.
3. What did you learn about color and mixing paint/color with this project?
It takes a while to obtain the correct hue, tone, tint, and shade, especially if you do not have the right colors. Paint can smear when rushing through the process, but I learned that it can be avoided if I take my time and have patience. I also learned that proper lighting is essential when blending colors and painting surfaces.
4. What would you change about your finished project?
I probably would have made the wheel and the shapes bigger because I strayed outside the lines.
5. What do you think is the most successful part of your finished project?
The most successful part of my project is that it is finished, and I am happy with the shapes I have chosen.
