Negative Space Drawings
Spring semester 2024
Drawing 1
Project 1 completed February 2024
This assignment was designed to help me understand how to arrange objects to create balance between positive and negative space. The objects I used were a pair of scissors, a cell phone holder, a roll of beading thread, an earring stand with an assortment of earrings, a speaker (later removed), and an aloe vera plant.
Materials used were an 18 x 24 sketchbook sheet, viewfinder, various graphite pencils and erasers.
Project #1 Reflection and Analysis
- Describe how you used positive and negative space in Project #1.
I selected items that I had on hand. That was my jewelry stand with a few pairs of earrings and one or two earrings from a set. I then made sure I had several different shapes, for example, circles, rectangles, etc. After placing each object on and around the stand, I took note of how the shapes were arranged. I didn’t want to have too many circles close to each other. I used the viewfinder and selected the area that appeared to create the best balance for positive and negative space.
- What was the most challenging aspect of this project?
The most challenging aspect of this project was finding the objects to draw. Then, each object is placed to balance positive and negative spaces.
- Does your drawing have a focal point? (Where does your eye go first in the drawing?
I first noticed the aloe vera plant because it flows from left to right with the addition of a broken piece on the right.
- What aspects of your drawing could use improvement?
I could improve my drawing by filling the negative space below the scissors. I feel I could add another object to fill that space.
- What aspects of your drawing do you think are the most successful?
The aspect of my drawing that I think was the most successful was the swirls of the frame. I found it challenging initially, but I took my time and noted each twist and turn.
