I want to introduce the term Big Data and it’s importance, in this post.

Massive amount of data is generated because of various activities like google search, biological experiments, solar experiments, bank transactions, network traffic, etc.  Big data means massive amount of data.

An interesting question about Big Data is “who coined the term Big Data?”.  I have searched various posts and articles. To my surprise, the term was first used by Francies X.Diebold, an economist at University of Pennsylvania, in his paper “I coined the term ‘Big Data’ “. But its reasonable to think because some of the algorithms and models in Big Data toolkit,have base in economic modelling. Big data refers not only to massive amount of data and but also different ways of handling the data in new ways. The term, Big data related to computing context. So, i was searching for a person who used this term in computing industry. The term was used by John Mashey in 1990s. He was chief scientist at Silicon Graphics.

First paper in the filed of Big data was published by Google employees. It was later implemented by Yahoo. Now, we have different big data technologies or solutions.Processing of Big data helps in identifying useful patterns or observations. For example, to identify customer buying patterns, it is important to analyze all customer transactions. Data mining and machine learning techniques will be very helpful in identifying patterns or classifying data.
