Introduction

Though not the case for much of American constitutional history, today the U.S. Supreme Court is seen as the supreme interpreter of the U.S. Constitution. When Americans disagree over the meaning of the Constitution, they normally turn to the Court for adjudication and normally accept (even when they dislike) its constitutional judgments as authoritative.
