Past and Present

The past is like the present's shadow

On February 9, 1999, a Korean girl named Hae Min Lee was found dead in a park in Baltimore, Maryland. She was labeled missing six weeks ago by her family, when she went missing on the way to picking up her cousin. Through investigation, police found that the cause of her death was manual strangulation, a case of choking by hands. Many people pointed at Hae’s ex- boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was sent to prison a couple weeks after the body’s discovery, and he has been in prison ever since (Koenig). He was sent to prison due to the prime witness’, Jay Wilds’, testimony stating that Syed killed Hae Min Lee with his help.

Recently, Adnan Syed was brought back onto court, because the court believes that Adnan “received ineffective legal counsel” on his side, thus a new trial was upheld to determine whether Adnan Syed killed Hae Min Lee (Stack). Although Syed was imprisoned for nearly 2 decades, new evidence, such as Asia McClain’s testimony, was leaked over his imprisonment asserting that he should be released(Stack). His new legal counsel reviews old evidence, in addition to new evidence, thoroughly, suggesting that there could be more done for him. Looking at all of the evidence, such as the evidence found by autopsy and the State’s faulty timeline based on cell phone records, it seems more probable that Adnan Syed did not murder his ex- girlfriend, Hae Min Lee.
