Project II Value

Project II Reductive Value Review

In the still life project, I found this technique a lot easier for me. I tend to enjoy projects with less structure and control. Adding lots of material and than taking away to bring out the shapes and textures of the objects felt more natural for me. I believe the best project was the Collard Green Leaf. I used vine charcoal to lay down material with some loose charcoal. I took away material using my erasure and a paintbrush to create the texture of the vines in the leaf.

Mama May I – This homework drawing answered the question “What does freedom mean for me?”. I chose a picture of my Great Grandmother in her police uniform, White roses, Tarot Cards, and a copper sphere. I chose these items because my great grandmother as a police officer represents both freedom and oppression. The white roses represents purity, spirituality, and transformation. The tarot cards represents freedom to connect with one’s spiritual self in ancient and innovative ways. The copper sphere represents my own freedom to love unconditionally both myself and humanity. I loved expressing myself through this project and used vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, a paintbrush, and a makeup sponge to laydown and take away material.

Take Aways:

Accessories such as makeup sponges and paintbrushes help to gently lay down material in hard to get creases to enhance texture and space

Don’t forget to focus on negative space when sketching for these projects as problem areas are greatly enhanced by the technique of laying down material and erasure
