Math 1001 – Grade Calculation
The syllabus states the following percentages:
Syllabus Quiz: 1% Discussions: 10% Homework: 19%
Quizzes: 20% Midterm: 25% Final Exam: 25%
IF WE HAVE NOT TAKEN THE MIDTERM YET:
((Discussion Average)*0.10 + (Homework Average) * 0.19+ (Quiz Average) * 0.20) + (Syllabus Quiz Grade * 0.01)) / 0.55
You might ask – why are we dividing by 0.55?? This is because we have not yet taken the midterm or final exam, so all of this only represents 55% of your grade. The midterm will be 20% and the final exam will be 25% bringing the total eventually to 100%.
Your discussion average is located in iCollege “Grades” as “Current Discussion Average”.
Find your homework average by adding all your homework grades and divide by the number of homework assignments. Make sure that even if you’ve missed assignments, you divide by the number of assignments that have been due up to this point. If we’ve had 5 homework assignments and you’ve only done 4, you still add up the grades on the four assignments and divide by 5 because you have a zero on one of those assignments. SEE THE CALENDAR to find out how many have been due up to this point.
Find your quiz average by adding all your quiz grades and divide by the number of quizzes. (If you took more than one attempt on a quiz be sure you only use the highest grade you earned on each quiz. Only the highest grade is kept even though you can see all the attempts in the MyMathLab gradebook.) Make sure that even if you’ve missed a quiz (or quizzes), you divide by the number of quizzes that have been due up to this point. If we’ve had 4 quizzes and you’ve only done 3, you still add up the grades on the three quizzes and divide by 4 because you have a zero on one of those quizzes. SEE THE CALENDAR to find out how many have been due up to this point.
*****Note: To see your individual grades on homework and quizzes you must look in the MyMathLab gradebook. These are not posted in iCollege. Only the discussion post and Project Impacts grades are posted in the iCollege gradebook.
Here’s an example.
Let’s say your averages are as follows:
Discussion average: 100% Homework average: 91% Quiz average: 84% Syllabus Quiz: 100%
To calculate your current grade:
(100*0.10 + 91 * 0.19 + 84 * 0.20 + 100 * 0.01) / 0.50 =
45.09 / 0.55 = 90.18
90.18 So your current grade in the class would be 90.56% overall which is an “A”. (Please see the syllabus for the breakdown of letter grades.)
If you have any extra credit points from the Remind texts, watching live sessions, etc., those will also be added at the end of the semester.

IF WE HAVE ALREADY TAKEN THE MIDTERM:
Again, the syllabus states the following percentages:
Discussions: 10% Homework: 19% Quizzes: 20% Midterm: 25%
Final Exam: 25% Syllabus Quiz: 1%
((Discussion Average)*0.10 + (Homework Average) * 0.19 + (Quiz Average) * 0.20) + (Midterm Exam Grade (with review points) * 0.25) + (Syllabus Quiz * 0.01)) / 0.75
See the explanations in the section above about how to find the individual averages. *****Note: To see your individual grades on homework and quizzes you must look in the MyMathLab gradebook. These are not posted in iCollege. Only the discussion post and project grades are posted in the iCollege gradebook.
You might ask – why are we dividing by 0.75?? This is because we have not yet taken the final exam, so all of this only represents 75% of your grade. The final exam will be 25% bringing the total eventually to 100%.
Here’s an example.
Let’s say your averages are as follows:
Discussion average: 100% Homework average: 91% Quiz average: 84%
Midterm Exam (with review points): 72% Syllabus Quiz: 100%
To calculate your current grade:
(100*0.10 + 91 * 0.19 + 84 * 0.20 + 72 * 0.25 + 100 * 0.01) / 0.75 =
63.09 / 0.75 = 84.12
So your current grade in the class would be 84.12% overall which is a “B”.
If you have any extra credit points from Remind texts, watching live sessions, etc., those will also be added at the end of the semester.

IF WE HAVE ALREADY TAKEN THE FINAL EXAM:
Again, the syllabus states the following percentages:
Discussions: 10% Homework: 19% Quizzes: 20% Midterm: 25% Final Exam: 25% Syllabus Quiz: 1%
(Discussion Average)*0.10 + (Homework Average) * 0.19 + (Quiz Average) * 0.20) + (Midterm Exam Grade (with review points) * 0.25) + (Syllabus Quiz * 0.01) + (Final Exam * 0.25)
*****Note: To see your individual grades on homework and quizzes you must look in the MyMathLab gradebook. These are not posted in iCollege. Only the discussion post and project grades are posted in the iCollege gradebook.
Here’s an example.
Let’s say your averages are as follows:
Discussion average: 100% Homework average: 91% Quiz average: 84%
Midterm Exam (with review points): 72% Syllabus Quiz: 100% Final Exam: 68%
To calculate your current grade:
100*0.10 + 91 * 0.19 + 84 * 0.20 + 72 * 0.25 + 100 * 0.01 + 68 * 0.25 = 80.09
So your current grade in the class would be 80.09% overall which is a “B”.
If you have any extra credit points from Remind texts, watching live sessions, etc., those will also be added at the end of the semester (AFTER THE FINAL EXAM).
