Program Overview
The Amgen Scholars Program at Duke is an intensive 10-week research experience for undergraduates interested in biotechnology and drug discovery. Scholars select a faculty mentor conducting world-class drug discovery research from 15+ departments including Pharmacology & Cancer Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, and Biomedical Engineering. Scholars will conduct independent research related to the lab’s ongoing projects, mentored by a team of faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students. Outside of the lab, students will:
• visit local biotechnology and pharma companies in Research Triangle Park, home to 250+ companies
• participate in seminars, journal clubs, poster presentations, and programming that support graduate school preparedness
• attend Amgen Scholars U.S. Symposium in California where students hear first hand from leading scientists working in the industry and academia Duke Amgen Scholars will also participate in social and cultural activities that build community and showcase the vibrant, creative, and innovative city of Durham, NC.
Financial Support
Duke Amgen Scholars receive the following support and benefits:
• Stipend ($4,300)
• Housing – Scholars will live in on-campus Duke housing with other Duke Amgen Scholars.
• Meals ($800)
• Travel – Funding for travel to and from the Amgen Scholars Program at Duke will be provided, as well as travel to the required Amgen Scholars Symposium in July.
Eligibility
Amgen Scholars U.S. Program applicants must be:
• U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents;
• Undergraduate students enrolled in accredited four-year colleges or universities in the United States, Puerto Rico or other U.S. territories; and
• Sophomores (with four quarters or three semesters of college experience), juniors or non-graduating seniors (who are returning in the fall to continue undergraduate studies).
U.S. Program applicants must also have:
• A cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or above; and
• An interest in pursuing a Ph.D. or M.D.- Ph.D.
*Previous research experience is not a requirement for participation in the program.

The Amgen Scholars Program at Duke is administered through the Office of Biomedical Graduate Education (OBGE) in the School of Medicine at Duke University. OBGE unites the PhD programs in the School of Medicine at Duke and provides support, resources, and training to biomedical graduate students.

Every year, the Amgen Scholars U.S. Program provides hundreds of selected undergraduate students throughout the U.S. with the opportunity to engage in a hands-on research experience at many of the nation’s premier educational institutions. Currently, thirteen institutions in the U.S. host the summer research program. The Amgen Foundation has committed $74 million over sixteen years to this global initiative to make the opportunity possible for thousands of students.
