June – July 2024
2B and 4B charcoal pencils on 18″x24″ paper

The process practiced in this project requires much patience as I had to build up layers using the material. This type of drawing used the charcoal pencil to build value to the point where it does not show lines or erasure marks. I had to be patient and careful since I did not want to smudge the soft lines. This project helped me practice using charcoal pencils, building value, not smudging, or erasing, and how to proportion my drawings. I also got time to focus on what is important to me and what is fascinating to draw when thinking about the Quiet Drawing and Recycled Being.

This would be one of my favorite projects to approach. I had to make my lines lighter and control the angle which I put the pencil on the paper to ensure that the charcoal did not get too dark. My Quiet drawing had a beautiful range of values due to there being a bright light as the center of my piece. I was able to portray the switch of the night light quite well by creating light layers for shadows. All in all, I had to practice drawing lightly and using that lightness as layers for value. I was able to gain more insight on proportions and the importance of variety.
