Project Four consisted of three parts, and the first was to draw bell papers. Bell peppers have an organic, unique shape per bell pepper and they are usually not too symmetric. This allowed us to begin setting up for drawing the skull and face, something that is also organic, unique, and not exactly symmetric. The drawings were done with ink and a crow quill pen. That first part had four ways to draw the bell pepper, one with a contour line, one with hatching, one with wash, and lastly with everything including stippling. The second part of the project was to draw a skull. The skull would be drawn using a mix of mediums: vine charcoal, charcoal pencil, and conté crayon. The last part of this project would be to draw a self-portrait.
I loved drawing the skull. There were many shadows and small edges to be aware of, and the big picture looked almost daunting. Once attacked, it was really exciting to keep layering and have fun with the process. I got excited to use the conte crayon as well for that pop of color as well as contrast to the toned paper. The self-portrait was drawn live– using a mirror to my side the whole process. The use of different mediums allowed me to show a lot of quality. My favorite part of the piece was drawing the hair. Hair is exciting to draw and there are so many different forms, but mine was slightly messy which helped add some dimension. I found that having the clothes almost drift away brought more attention to the face.
