Eliminating Book Deserts Project
Purpose of the Service-Learning Project: According to current research, there is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children in some low-income, urban schools (Neuman, 2016). Therefore, the purpose of this project is to set-up, manage, and build a long-term book drive in the neediest schools surrounding Georgia State University Perimeter College in order to alleviate this problem. Books for elementary, middle, and high school students will be collected. All the books must be gently used or new in order to have durability for the students who will read the texts.
Project Goal: The goal of this project is to collect at least 1,000 books to donate to schools in need during the fall and spring of each year.
Project Timeframe: Fall Semester (September-October); Spring Semester (February-March)
Campuses: Clarkston, Alpharetta, Online, Decatur
Project Rationale: This is a long-term service-learning project. The project will run during the fall and spring semester of every academic year beginning fall 2018. This project is a partnership between the students in Dr. Flowers’ online EDUC 2110 and EDUC 2120 education courses. The Clarkston campus library, Alpharetta campus library, and local schools in Clarkston and Alpharetta areas who are in need of books. The books for the project can be used for the little free libraries, to build the school libraries collection, to build classroom libraries, and for students to take home.
