Fall 2022 Theme – The Urban Experience in Literacy

Dr. Rich Milner is a prolific scholar in urban education. Many of the themes he addresses in his work related to literacy include race, diversity issues in literacy, and opportunity gaps. Therefore, the theme for this issue will include both issues related to teachers of color and students in literacy within urban schools. Some of the issues in this theme will include both research-based and practice pieces related to critical literacy, interrogation of texts, diversity issues in literacy, race and representation, diverse classrooms, and planning for instruction.

Manuscripts due: December 15, 2022

Types of Manuscripts Considered:

Full-length manuscripts: should be empirically based submissions and should not exceed 5,000 words including all figures, appendices, and references.

Literature Reviews: should be conceptual, critical, systemic, or integrative and should not exceed 4,000 words (including all figures, appendices, and references).

Best Practice: should be written in first or third person and not exceed 3,000 words. The focus of this section is either practitioner submissions or a blending of theory to practice.

Lesson Plans: should not exceed 2,000 words and include a lesson, rationale for the lesson, and an assessment section.

Children’s Book Reviews: should not exceed 500 words and the texts must include a main protagonist from and underrepresented group.  

Submissions:

Authors planning to submit manuscripts should follow the guidelines below:

  1. Please submit a cover letter. The cover letter should indicate that the manuscript is not published or under review or consideration at any other publication.
  2. A title page must be submitted. The title page should include an affiliation, email address, name, and current position.
  3. The full manuscript should be submitted with the abstract at the top of the page. The manuscript should be written in APA 7, 12-point font, times new roman, and double-spaced.
