THE MULTIETHNIC EXPERIENCE IN CHILDREN’S AND YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE

The purpose of this special theme issue is to publish new theoretical frameworks, models, and practice paradigms regarding multiethnic literature in the classroom. As co-editors, we wish to delve into the ways in which multiethnic literature is used in the classroom. For the purpose of this special theme issue, we define multiethnic literature as books written by informed insiders to an ethnic group.
Submissions for this special theme issue can include and are not limited to various educational sites such as reservations, Saturday schools, afterschool programs, community-based programs, summer enrichment programs, tutoring programs, community education programs, university-school partnerships, reading clinics, online learning communities, book clubs, communities in schools’ programs, university reading clinics, adult education programs, prison programs, Even Start, Head Start, library programs, charter schools, private schools, and public schools.
Authors who want to submit manuscripts for this project may include both traditional and nontraditional methodologies such as literary analysis, content analysis, critical analysis, racial literacies, action research, and critical race theories, ethnography, grounded theory, narrative, survey research, cross-cultural, critical ethnography, longitudinal, mixed methods, and descriptive. Scholars who draw on traditional or contemporary research traditions which use existing research models or those creating new research models and paradigms are a welcome addition to this issue. The types of submissions can include commentaries, essays, and articles.
Submission Information: To submit a manuscript, email Dr. Sean Ruday at rudaysr@longwood.edu with the following documents attached:
1) Title Page, including:
a. manuscript title
b. author(s)’ name and email address
d. author(s)’ brief bio indicating affiliation, recent publications
e. 100-200 word abstract
2) Masked Manuscript. Do not include any identifying information in your manuscript document or in the document file name. Replace author identification with “Author” or “Author A,” etc. Please make sure your abstract is also included in this document.
3) Tables and/or Charts. Tables and charts should be embedded in the manuscript.
Submissions must be in MS word and follow the style outlined in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2019, 7th edition).
Co-Editors’ Biographies
Dr. Tiffany A. Flowers is an associate professor of education at Georgia State University Perimeter College in the department of cultural and behavioral sciences. She has authored publications focused on her research interests in African American literacy development, family literacy, urban education, children’s and young adult literature, field experience, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Dr. Sean Ruday is an associate professor and the program coordinator of English education at Longwood University. He is particularly interested in inclusive and equitable teaching in the English classroom. He has written 14 books for educators, all published by Routledge Eye on Education.
