Students, Faculty and Staff of GSU, community members, and professional actors are welcome and encouraged to audition for our shows. Plot of plays:
What happens when the truths of science clash with the financial hopes of a community, and those in power manipulate public opinion and policy to serve their interests?
Set in Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1917, this reimagined production of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People explores the clash between truth, corruption, and community loyalty in the American South. Against the backdrop of the Progressive Era, World War I, and growing industrialization, Dr. Stockmann discovers a dangerous contamination threatening the town’s main source of income, the hot springs, only to face fierce opposition from his brother, the town’s mayor. .
Performances will be held Feb. 28-Mar 2 & Mar7-9
Rehearsals begin Day, Monday, December 2nd

- Dr. Thomas Stockman, 20s-50s, Male
- Official Doctor of the town’s Hot Springs and brother of the mayor, who got him the job. Stockmann is idealistic and excitable. Willing to risk it all for the sake of truth.
- Strong memorization skills needed.
- Mrs. Katherine Stockman, 20s-50s, Female
- Dr. Stockmann’s wife. She is loyal and often more realistic than her husband. Morton Keele is her father.
- Petra Stockman, 18-30s, Female
- The daughter of Thomas and Katherine, Petra is the embodied conflict of both her parents. She is idealistic, but also practical. She wants to believe the best about people, but can also see when that’s no longer possible. She is a schoolteacher.
- Peter Stockman, 20s-50s, Male
- Dr. Stockmann’s brother. Chairman of the baths committee. Mayor of the town. He is intelligent, calculating, and as strong willed as his brother. Married to his work.
- Mr. Benjamin Howard, 20s-50s, Male
- Editor of The People’s Herald, the town’s leftist newspaper. Has the heart of a radical, but feels sometimes he must water down his message to get the word out.
- Mr. Simon Brown, 20s-50s, Male
- An assistant at the newspaper, he is a radical, like Howard, but he is also ambitious and plans to run for office.
- Miss Isla Laken, 18-40s, Female
- The newspaper’s printer. Suffragette. Family money allows her to assist the “Messenger” by printing on credit. She is a vital member of many organizations in town and has sway with the people. Believes in achieving goals while minimizing personal risk.
- Captain William Forrester, 18-30s, Male
- A ship captain who has little interest in local politics. Has a large family home in town, but is rarely there. Loyal, steadfast, kind.
- Mr. Morton Keele, 30s-60s, Male
- Owns several of the tanneries that Dr. Stockmann implicates in his water pollution report. Father of Mrs. Stockmann. Old fashioned, self-made man, street smart.

You do not need to be memorized, but the more familiar you are with the piece, the better you can step into the character’s world.
