I chose to search “Refueling after a long run” for this assignment. I searched using the Boolean method of “and” – “Refuel + After + Long Run.” I am currently training for a marathon and I am looking for information on refueling after my long runs (60+ minutes of running). I thought this to be the perfect time to get more information on refueling.

Overall, the results from all six of the search engines were very similar. They pulled from many running sites, both large communities or businesses and small. Runner’s World and My Fitness Pal were the most common between the six search engines. The one search engine that had more variety in its results was Meta Crawler. Meta Crawler also provided news articles in my search results. I removed ads, images, and maps for my results.

A Word on Internet Privacy

I am an avid supporter in Internet privacy. It took having someone stalk me a few years ago for me to understand the importance of my safety that this topic has. Because of this incident, I now can find little when searching myself online and even found (purposely) false information on some of these sites where I looked myself up.

I think it’s imperative for individuals to think twice about what they are putting out into the World Wide Web before making that immediate call to release it. Its so easy to “fill out a survey” to win something “free” but the sad news is that things are never free. Everything comes with a cost. I think that websites like Spokeo or related are able to gain this information simply and easily. All it takes is handing consumers an enticing object (like “free” money) and letting those individuals do all the work. It is quite scary how easy it seems businesses are able to obtain personal information about millions of individuals.

I think that there is far too much information easily accessible to the world about who we are, where we live, what we do, etc. While I hope that we would have much stricter policies on obtaining personal information, I think it is also up to our own selves to be aware of what and how much information we are giving out.

Tool Inventory

Unit 2 :: Assignment 3

Task: You have to lead an online presentation on the contents of your history term paper.

Tools: UseVisme.

Reason: Visme is an online tool that allows the user to create interactive and engaging stories. Users can create presentation, infographics, reports, and more. Visme will help (me) create a customized and modern presentation that will help the audience feel engaged.

Task: The final exam for your economics course is coming up, and you need to collect all of your (and hopefully your classmates’) online resources for a study guide.

Tools: Evernote and Google Hangout.

Reason: Evernote is a virtual school backpack – it is the planner that holds all your important dates, it is the binder that has your class notes in, it is the laptop that can create documents – it is a critical tool to every college or higher education student. Google Hangout is where all those notes, documents, keys, and data come together to share with classmates. Both have been critical and very influential in my last few years in school.

Task: You need to create an interactive tour of Berlin as an assignment for your study abroad program.

Tools: Prezi Presentation.

Reason: Prezi is the modern powerpoint. It offers ease of use for any user, allowing one to create elevated presentations in short amounts of time. My favorite thing about Prezi is its interactive and captivating capabilities. Because of its visual aspects, it will allow audiences to retain more information. It has become my go-to for creating presentations in school and in my job because of how fun it is to make the presentations and how easy it is.

Task: You and a group of your classmates have been asked to do a collaborative research project on how Facebook has affected the social habits of young adults.

Tools: Google Drive, IFTTT, PowerPoint / collaboration or research projects.

Reason: This kind of collaboration project would require more than one web communication tool. Several organizational tools will be needed to ensure all information stays up-to-date, accurate, and organized. Skype would offer face-to-face interaction and  a way to keep chats between all classmates in one place. IFTTT would allow the group to keep track and organize all of their similar content, specifically with everyone’s social media outlets and habits. A PowerPoint presentation would be the final touch of the research project. The PowerPoint presentation will be able to include key visuals, like graphs, research findings, pictures, quotes, etc. Creating a PowerPoint then allowing everyone to edit it and pass it around, along with any other important research documents, can happen through Google Drive.

Hey y’all!

My name is Shelby. My dog’s name is Bella. I grew up in Georgia. I am in my last year at Georgia State. Me and school have never been best friends, it’s actually been quite a struggle if I am being honest. It has taken me almost eight years to get through school from changing majors to way too many life events (a few close loved ones’ deaths, moving more than I should speak about, cutting off an engagement, you name it.) to trying to overcome disabilities and anxiety to working full-time this entire schooling (retail management), you name it. Ha. Again, its been a struggle.

But here we are! Last year. I’m definitely saying hallelujah to my Jesus for making it this far.

Anyways, back to me… I am an exercise science major. I love  fitness, nutrition, the human body, science, healthcare… okay I’m rambling now but you get the point. I love understanding form and function so exercise science felt like a good opportunity for doors to be opened to that post-college. As of now my goal is either to become a nutritionist or an occupational therapist. However, that depends on a lot. I am focused on getting through the last of my bachelors degree for the time being.

So, outside of posts and assignments for this class (LT2010), I hope to fill this blog with adventures I take with my dog (me + her = The Belles, as I like to call us), fun moments in my life, and just sharing my unique story. We all have a story… what’s yours?

Xo,

Shelbs
