The Compassion Project I wanted to highlight African-American photographers and the importance of documenting your neighborhood instead of having an outsider come in and misrepresent it. I added a few important figures that captured impactful events throughout African American history such as Gordon Parks, Jamal Shabazz, and Carrie Weems. This project was personal for me because I’m a photographer and I try to capture every moment in my life.
For this project, I wanted to incorporate the physical aspect of different analog items into the altered book. I used one of my film cameras which I took completely apart and used the main components for the book cover. I used negatives, film canisters, and images I’ve taken over the years for the interior of the book.
The three drawing we had to do for this project was one-point perspective, two-point perspective and atmospheric perspective. I decided to pick locations that I go to in my daily for this assignment one being the local skatepark, my darkroom, and the other is a DIY skatepark.
The concept I was going for in the sequential narrative is that I can gift friends and family with huge print. A lot of people do not have access to physical prints and framing. We live in a digital world now so it’s a different feeling when you get to interact with a physical copy of a moment you cherish so much.
