The compassion poster project required for us to discover and research a topic that we want a specific audience to have more compassion towards. For me personally, domestic violence was a topic that I wished I had more knowledge in after reading “Educated” and watching “Juvenile Justice” on Netflix. I also believe that this topic is easily looked over or neglected by the public and decided to choose domestic violence for my topic. I first dug in and researched some statistics regarding familial abuse and discovered that spouse abuse was the most common–naturally, I considered myself focusing heavier on spouse abuse for my posters but changed my mind when I learned that the majority of such abusers experienced domestic violence as a child. Unfortunately, the victims of abuse were growing up to be abusers themselves. After realizing that, I focused my two posters on child abuse and set the audience as individuals who are often around children, such as school students, teachers and counselors.
Through this project, I was not only able to gain knowledge on such crucial topic but was also able to remind myself of how art can be used so powerfully to advocate a strong message for the public. Additionally, observing other classmates’ process facilitated my thinking and pushed me further to achieve more on this project. Overall, I was able to learn how to work better with collages, a skill I had always wanted to improve on.
