For the project “8 Ways of Looking At a Paper,” I was required to create paper sculptures using a single sheet of paper and then to arrange journal pages describing my sculptures. Through this project, my understanding of 3-D elements, the different perspectives of an object , and the importance of lighting were enhanced. Personally, I approached this project with the theme of a “small cozy town.” Although this theme sounds quite simple, I was able to create 8 delicate sculptures–a boy, a girl, a tree, a bird, a house, a sun, a moon, and a flower garden–to present my idea of a small town.
At first, it was very difficult for me to process the idea of creating a sculpture from a single copy paper. While researching different ideas for the project, the first sculpture that came to my mind was to create a bird–this decision was quite impulsive, but it luckily provided me with following ideas for my other sculptures. I especially enjoyed the way I curled the thin strands of paper for my bird’s feather, so I incorporated such techniques to the remainder of the project as well.
Following this project, I was able to gain understanding of different perspectives in 3D, including the importance of lighting when presenting my work. Through the opportunity of observing other students works, I was inspired to see how unique and innovative every project was; I was not only inspired but also motivated to improve my work. Moreover, it was definitely challenging to work with limited supplies and delicate objects–to my surprise, I was better able to enhance my creativity when my supplies were limited compared to the past, when I was not limited in any kind of way.
