For this week’s assignment, I used Indeed because I am fairly well-versed in the website. I started by simply typing “writing” into the description, and changing the experience level to “Entry”. I know that “writing” is pretty broad, but for this exercise, I wanted to see how many entry-level positions there were under the lens of solely “writing”. After finding two positions that seemed interesting, I changed the location to “Remote” and “within 50 miles” to see what other opportunities there were via the Internet, which led me to find one more position.
The positions that I found were Technical Writer (Government Relations), Proofreader, and Junior Technical Writer. A general consensus was that the applicant would need a Bachelor’s degree in some sort of English area, whether that be journalism or simply English does not matter. They also require some sort of experience and a minimum typing speed. Most of them require a familiarity with certain programs like Microsoft Word, and proficiency in the English language. Some of the responsibilities include document creation, content revision and review, and collaboration.
Here is a list of all of the specific abilities that employers seem to be looking for in this field:
- Proofreading
- Editing
- Proficiency in the English language
- Ability to communicate information through documentation
- Technical Writing
- Knowledge of specific programs
- Knowledge of terminology
- Critical Thinking Skills
Here is a list of all of my documentation that will demonstrate my abilities:
- Resume
- My essays for Philosophy classes
- demonstrates critical thinking skills
- Copies of my reviewed and revised work
- Before and After
Here is a list of all of the documentation I need before I graduate:
- Formal Writing
- This includes formal essays, formal letters, and formal memos
- Examples of more revised work
From this experience, I learned that I know more about what I need to do than I thought I did. I feel more confident in moving forward in my career knowing that it is possible to achieve all of the necessary qualifications. I do think that I know what I want to do next. Next, I do want to find more remote positions that I can work on and prepare to plan for the next steps in my career by creating a stronger portfolio.
