Girl Post Chapter 9

In chapter 9 we go over verbs there forms and tenses. We learn about the 3 verb tenses regular and irregular verbs and also multi worded verbs. Vito also talks about active and passive voice which is something that i would like to go over in class. Overall i felt that this chapter was pretty easy as i have definitely learned about this before in high school English and Spanish courses.

Chapter 9 Verbs

Chapter 9 covers verbs and the forms and tenses they come in. There are three tenses with can come in different forms depending on the process in which the verb is in. Verbs also come in multi-worded form. I don’t see myself having issues with the tenses of verbs but identify the form is something I may need to work on.

Vitto goes over verbs in chapter 9. Most of the concepts came easily to me and felt more like a refresher chapter. I will have to practice a little more with how the verb phrases and how to correctly order them in a sentence. I feel like I completely understand the verb tenses. I liked that she easily broke down the verb tenses and forms. I feel I will need to do some more work to fully memorize all the regular vs. irregular verbs. Diagraming these verbs wasn’t too confusing but, as always, more work on diagramming always helps.

GIRL Post For Wednesday 3/28

This chapter started out weird for me. Vito said that verbs are the most complicated aspect of language and I honestly don’t think so. I feel like some of the other things that we have gone over are harder.

I will say I never thought about how many kinds of verbs there are. It does feel  little easy going through it similar to the last chapter. The exercises were pretty easy.

Ch. 9 Verbs

I vaguely remember learning this in middle school. This chapter is one that must be learned in steps. You first have to be able to identify the tense, and then go from there. As usual, more practice will not hurt, but I will need a ton of practice on the diagramming. Vito’s charts and exercises throughout chapter nine made this lesson seem more like a quick refresher. I’m excited for class to see how the material will be presented because it’s always helpful for any new concepts to be presented to me in multiple ways.

GIRL Post: Chapter 9

Chapter 9 concerns itself specifically with verbs, and begins by listing the five main forms of verbs in English, as well as the two categories they fall into. Some of this chapter comes naturally, such as the two tenses of English verbs. However, I found it interesting that future tense is not considered one of the basic verb tenses. It will take me a bit to remember all of the different aspects of verbs, but I feel as if I will be able after going over it a little more. The ordering of verb phrases is also a little confusing to me on my first read of the chapter. It seems like Vitto explains this pretty clearly though, so I am not too worried. The parts of the chapter about active and passive voice seem very relevant, and like they will be able to help me improve my writing by considering them. Despite being familiar with a good deal of the material, this was still a loaded chapter, and I will be revisiting it later to make sure I fully comprehend it.

Chapter 9

I’m chapter 9 there are so many break downs of verbs. There were so many that it was kind of confusing for me. I felt it was very necessary to make flash cards. Especially for the section of the chapter where it gave many examples of the types of  verbs.  I struggled on exercise 9.3 on how to identify if a sentence is perfect or progressive. I understand that a perfect form has a form of have and the progressive form has to have a form of be, but it was hard for me to identify some in the exercise.

GIRL Post Chapter 9

Similar to chapter 8, chapter 9 is a blast from the past. In this chapter we are shown how to identify aspects, voices, and tenses. This will be important when it comes to identifying passive voice and avoiding it in our writing. This chapter seems simple enough and I remember the majority of it from high school.

Chapter 9

This chapter gave me flashbacks to high school Spanish class, in a good sense and a bad sense. Infinitives and their conjugation, as well as the presence of irregular verbs, is an interesting thing which a lot of languages have in common, and re-examining English verbs from that clinical perspective is entertaining. Yet then it flashes me back to the bad part of high school Spanish class, which is the laundry list of alternative conjugation types (past perfect, present progressive, etc). They’re obviously not confusing in practice, but the sheer number of categories always throws me off. It’s also just funny that future tenses are considered their own type despite English not necessarily even having a future tense compared to other languages.

GIRL Post: Chapter 9

I like that Chapter 9, like Chapter 8, explains the concepts/implicit reasoning behind verb usage. Vito often explains the manner in which native speakers understand English and the meanings behind verbs that are not explicitly stated. I’m glad that I did exercise 9.1 because I did not realize that a verb phrase could have a tense and two aspects (present, progressive). I also noticed that verb moods are the same in Spanish and English; however, the concepts are much easier to understand in English. I also see that passive sentences confuse grammarians when diagramming. As a Journalism major, I was taught to never use passive voice. It was interesting for me to read that it is okay to use passive voice in other professions. I am having a hard time noticing the difference between passive voice and from other tense and aspect combinations.
