GIRL Post: Special Structures (Chap. 3)

I’m not sure how to differentiate between a verb + preposition phrase and a phrasal verb or idiom. In the English language, idioms are really common so it may be hard for me to notice phrases like “turned up” as a idiom. I also keep getting the sentences with prepositional phrases in the subject incorrect. When graphing, does the prepositional phrases go beneath the verb (in the base line)? Number 5 on page 83, why is kicked in an idiom? I also have no understanding on the adverbial objectives. I have no idea on how to identify them.
