Technology Requirements

Georgia State University strongly recommends the use of devices that include webcams and up‐to‐date Internet browsers, virus protection, and Microsoft Windows or Mac operating systems. The use of devices not meeting these criteria may result in the inability to access important resources or complete course requirements in iCollege. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure that all technical requirements are met prior to the beginning of the term. If you are unsure of your device’s compliance with these criteria, please consult the GSU Help Desk at help@gsu.edu or 404‐413‐HELP.

For the best experience in an online course, Georgia State University strongly recommends the use of computers that can run the latest Microsoft or Mac operating systems, up‐to‐date web browsers, and up‐to‐date virus protection. These computers must also be capable of supporting web cameras, speakers, and microphones.

The use of other devices such as iPhones, iPads, Android phones, and Chromebooks is permissible in some situations but is not considered a suitable primary device used for participation in an online course.  The use of these types of devices may result in the inability to access important resources or complete course requirements. Chromebooks are not compatible with the proctoring software required in many online courses.

A reliable connection to the internet is required. In high‐stakes testing, assignment submission situations, and synchronous course activities conducted through WebEx, a wired connection is strongly encouraged.   It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they have appropriate access to the technology needed to complete the online course prior to the beginning of the term.

You may also need to have your Panther ID and/or state-issued ID such as a driver’s license available for some course activities that require proctored testing.

To determine whether your technology is ready for an online course, review the following resources.

  • Ensure your computer has the following:
    • The latest operating system
    • An updated web browser
    • Updated virus protection
    • A web camera—can be integrated or external
    • Speakers/microphone‐ can be integrated or external
  • Ensure that you can access the Internet.
  • Perform a System Check
