Coaching with Clear Explanation
During the introduction to coaching lessons, teachers should model what a coach would say about the writing using this phrase:
“I circled ______________________ because__________________________.”
Encourage the students to explain the handwriting error in words and by pointing to the written letter and comparing it to the correct models found on the student card and the top of the Letter Learning pages.
When students are coaching, they should be encouraged to first circle, then think about the kind of verbal feedback they will give to their partner when they switch papers.
