Sight Words Lessons

Please find the Sight Word Lesson Table of Contents to view the Sight Word Lessons. We have all done sight words in reading, but actually writing the sight word is a much harder task because the child must produce the letters from his memory. The Table of Contents shows a list of sight words that are taught.

The first lesson is just one word because you will be teaching the process in this lesson. Once the process is learned, each lesson will cover two sight words. Notice it will be four lessons until you get to a supplemental script. That is because it takes two lessons to introduce the task. Click on the video to see the I DO of a Sight Word lesson. Be sure to watch the video before moving on, as this lesson can be confusing.

  • Lesson Overview: Students will write targeted sight word(s) immediately, after a 5-second delay, and after a 10-second delay
  • Students coach on the correct spelling of the targeted sight word

Here is an example of a Sight Word paper. Sight word writing is one of the lessons the kids like the best because they get to count Mississippis. Each child will cover his own page with his student card before writing the word on each line. Then, students will exchange papers to be coached. Coaches first check the spelling, which we define as the right letters in the right order. If this is correct, a thumbs up is given, and then the coach can look at the handwriting and circle one letter that might need practice. The Fix It Line is used to rewrite the entire word. If it was incorrectly spelled, the student should look again at the word at the top of the page before rewriting. If a letter is circled, students should write the word again and do better on the circled letter.

There is a blank sight word page in the Supplemental Materials section for teachers to use with other sight words, if they wish.
