Letter Learning Review

Please find the Table of Contents page for Letter Learning Review/Word Building Lessons that looks like this. As PAWS was developed, we recognized the need to review letters and provide more practice for the students who need it. We developed the Letter Learning Review Lessons to do this. Additionally, we wanted something a little different from the routine they had been doing in Letter Learning. We designed the lessons so that the students would be coaching themselves, not one another. The kids really enjoyed this and it made them begin to look at their own work with a critical eye. We strategically placed these review lessons in the schedule so that they occur after every 4-6 new letters are learned.

When you look at the script column, you will see that the first time you teach this lesson it will only be the Letter Learning Review. The next time you teach the lesson, it will go much more quickly so you will also introduce the Word Building Activity. This is another way to build in more practice, and also to scaffold to spelling lessons.

Let’s look at the Letter Learning Review. Then we will look at the Word Building Activity.

Worksheet Format

  • Lesson Overview: students improve letter writing of previously taught letters by practicing and coaching themselves.
  • Students coach themselves.

This is an example of a Letter Learning Review page. Find the LLR-1 student page in the manual, and with sticky notes, label the I, WE, YOU parts as we describe them here. Notice it is quite different from the Letter Learning pages. We designed each line of the paper to be an I DO, WE DO YOU DO all on one page. The solid letter is the I DO as the teacher reviews the letter formation with the class. The tracing lines letters are the WE DO as the students practice along with the teacher. The rest of lines in each row are the YOU DO as the students independently write the letter four times for practice. Notice that this page only has one box for a number. This is because the student will be the writer, and then coach himself. On these review pages, the writer will then look at his own work and circle his very best attempt at each letter. We review 4 previously learned letters. Then, the final row is a chance to teach and practice the capitals. This row is not coached.
