Direct Instruction, also called the gradual release model, includes the I DO, WE DO, YOU DO parts of a lesson. It is one of the most effective teaching methods. This method of instruction provides clear instruction and demonstration by the teacher, supported practice with immediate feedback for the students, and the gradual release of control until students do the task on their own. Take a moment to read through this table to review the method. When teaching PAWS, it is helpful to actually use the terms “I DO”, “WE DO”, and “YOU DO” with the class and explain to them what happens in each part. This makes the lesson flow smoothly. The handwriting papers that are used actually have these words and icons on them at the bottom of the pages as well.
