We have provided some extension activities for each type of PAWS lesson. These are 5-10 minute skill building activities that relate to the PAWS handwriting lessons and can be done at the end of the PAWS lessons. The children engage in fun activities that either provide extra practice of already learned skills or build toward the development of future skills. A list of suggested activities is provided at the end of the lesson, and these can be found in the Extension Activity section of the manual.
The Word Building Activity you just learned about is one example of a Letter Learning Extension Activity, but here are a few others…
After and Before
Students practice letter recognition by playing a game with a partner. Students name the letter that comes either after or before a given letter.
Beginning Letter
Students practice identifying initial sounds and then finding the letter that makes the sound on the on the PAWS student card.
Beginning Sound
Students generate words that begin with a specific sound and observe as the teacher writes the words.
B and D Activity
Students are taught some “tricks” for distinguishing between “b” and “d” and then practice writing these letters.
Capital Letter Practice Activity
This activity can be used after the Letter Learning Review lessons. Students can continue to practice capital letters on write on/wipe-off boards.
