Sentence Copying and Fill-in-the-Blank

After learning to coach sentences that have been copied, students now take on the role of both writer and coach. The papers are similar to those in Lessons 4-6; but this time, the students are the writers. As writers, they copy the sentence on the paper, then exchange papers with the partner to coach one another. Finally, papers are returned and the Fix It Line is used. So, in these lessons, teachers basically need to explain when to switch papers for coaching and how to use the Fix It Line.

Lesson Organization
SC-7 I DO/ WE DO: Copy a complete sentence, coach.
SC-8 WE DO/ YOU DO: Copy a complete sentence, coach.
SC-9 and 10 I DO/WE DO/YOU DO: Copy a sentence starter and choose a word to complete the sentence, coach.

Errors and How to Use the Fix-It Line

To conserve time in the lessons, the students do not recopy the entire sentence on the Fix It Line. This table explains how to use the Fix It Line for each of the errors. During these lessons, teacher must model how to use the Fix It Line and monitor to be sure students are doing it correctly.

Circled Error Fix-It Line
Spell Check Rewrite misspelled or missing word
Spacing Write word, leave a space, write word
Capitalization Rewrite first word with capital
Punctuation Rewrite last word with punctuation
Circled Letter for Handwriting Trace that letter three times on the student card

The Think Cloud in SC 9 and 10

In SC-9, students are given word choices and must select that word that makes a complete sentence. In SC-10, students must complete a sentence on their own. The think cloud, seen above, is circled if the student has made a choice that does not make a complete sentence. The student must think again.

The writer must then rewrite the sentence correctly on the Fix-It Line.
