Similarities and Differences:  Almost all of the engines referenced either the exact same articles, or articles written on the exact same topic at the exact same time.  Really, the only standout difference between any of the results was the Big Data | Hype Cycle for Education article returned from dogpile.  To be honest, the metasearch engine results for each engine consisted of mostly adds, with only 7 search results per page, and between 30 and 40 ad-related results for each.  At least for the topic I was interested in, Google was still the best bet, and contained the most current search results compared to Bing, which featured slightly older articles.

Thanks for reading!

3 tips for being a successful online student:

  1.  Make a habit of checking what’s due and when at least twice a week.  In the past, if I only checked the course once a week, I was almost guaranteed to miss something.
  2. If an assignment description doesn’t seem to make sense, make sure to email the instructor immediately, as sometimes it’s difficult to express a certain degree of nuance in written descriptions.
  3. Make sure to at least look over assignments before automatically saying, “I’ll do it later.”  Something that you thought would take 15 minutes can end up taking a lot longer, putting stress on you and possibly causing you to miss an assignment.

Online Tools

Tool Inventory
1.  Task 2.  Tools 3.  Reasons

You have to lead an online presentation on the

contents of your history term paper.

Either Google Slides or Microsoft Powerpoint

and a Youtube video.

Using Youtube allows for an anytime

distribution scheme instead of a one-

time live presentation, and Slides and

Powerpoint are the leading choices

for presentation software.

The final exam for your economics course is coming

up, and you need to collect all of your (and

hopefully your classmates’) online resources for a

study guide.

Google Docs

Google Docs allows for live collaborative

online editing, and most people have a

Google account already, so compatibility

issues wouldn’t be a problem.

You need to create an interactive tour of Berlin

for your study abroad program.

Google Earth

Pretty much the only way to do a

tour that would allow interactivity (

using the Street View option)

You and a group of your classmates have been

asked to do a collaborative research project on

how Facebook has affected the social habits of

young adults

Google Docs, Sheets, Drawings, etc.

The Google Suite of products

A universally held suite of productivity

tools that almost everyone in the US has

free access to would make a

collaborative project much easier.
