Conciergerie and Le Chapelle

The Chapel today was absolutely gorgeous. I think it was similar to hoe Versailles made me feel regarding the perspective of the Revolutionaries. To know that this large amount of money was going into the Church would have angered me, especially knowing that the upper part of the chapel was for the King.

The Conciergerie was gorgeous as well, especially for a prison. The dining hall where the guards would have eaten was expansive and had a medieval feel to it. The prison cells were small, unsurprisingly. I was intrigued by the idea that wealthier prisoners were able to buy better beds. Felons are able to do that more indirectly nowadays if they have any political ties.

I thought it was very interesting to see this makeshift prison that was used during the revolution. It initially felt quaint and charming, not dungeon-like, but after learning about the rats and vermon and the buckets of waste, it didn’t sound too pleasant. Although, the Women’s courtyard seemed charming. It was so hard to how it must have felt to be a prisoner. But given the size of what we saw, cramming a few hundred prisoners in there would have been extremely uncomfortable.
