PROJECT 3 – ADDICTIVE SCULPTURE
Path to Healing, October 2021
Red Air Dry Clay
The goal of this project was to create an abstract or non-abstract sculpture out of clay. As someone who likes to make art with things/people that mean something to me, I decided to make a sculpture of a pair of lungs with branches engraved on the inside. I wanted to add flowers to signify the healing (because the branches represented the path) but there wasn’t enough for me to create them. I’ve had quite a few illnesses involving my lungs, so it felt right to make something that showcases the cure I want for myself regardless of whether I’ll actually receive it or not.
PROJECT 4 – FOUND MULTIPLE SCULPTURE
flowers before they were attached together
dry and painted (brown-ish red) sculpture of head
close-ups of more flowers and attached
(gave up at this point because i was frustrated with how to create a bouquet)
the desire to be seen as desired, November 2021
Red air dry clay, scrapbook paper (autumn colours), hot glue, floral wire (green), floral tape (green), acrylic paint
The goal of this project was to use multiple objects to create a form that has a dynamic and rhythmic textural surface. Inspired by a photo of a Black woman with afro hair painted in colourful spheres, I wanted to make a (genderless) Black person’s half of a head out of clay with a flower bouquet represented to be afro hair. The meaning of this art is meant to represent how afro hair was always and still is seen as “nappy” and “unprofessional,” and how Black people are always struggling with being seen as desirable or simply being considered a beauty standard compared to White people (or other non-Black people of colour). Afro hair is beautiful and has always been beautiful despite society’s distaste toward it, so that’s why I wanted to use flowers as the hair.
PROJECT 1 – EGG DROP
Which Came First?, September 2021
Toothpicks, hot glue, boiled egg
The goal for this project was to create something out of toothpicks that would protect a boiled egg from breaking when the art piece was dropped from several feet in the air. I had several sketches before deciding to go with a chicken-shaped piece, which I thought would be amusing because of the whole “which came first; the chicken or the egg” argument. In the end, the egg did crack, but the project itself was a new experience for me.
PROJECT 2 – SUBTRACTIVE SCULPTURE
Reef of the Heart, September 2021
Floral foam, plaster
The goal of this project was to use floral foam to create an abstract subtractive sculpture. The initial sketch was inspired by a teardrop (the action of crying is something I struggle with showing). Clearly, it evolved into something else entirely, but I wasn’t disappointed with the outcome. It ended up looking like a combination of a coral reef and a human heart, hence the name “reef of the heart.” I wanted to paint it with a turquoise and red colour palette, but I ran out of plaster, so I didn’t get to the paint part by the time the deadline came.
