NEGATIVE SPACE
For Project 1, my understanding of negative space is that we’re supposed to draw the spaces between items rather than the items themselves. I noticed drawing the spaces in between items gives you a picture of what’s there, but not what’s fully there (unless you fill in for the objects). At first, it was a bit difficult for me to get into because I always had trouble with scaling items on paper and making them smaller rather than drawing them the size they are. After we practiced it a few times on the drawing paper and in our sketchbooks, I eventually got the hang of it. I even started to use it in art I did on my own time because it helped me draw what I wanted easier. I think after I finished the Under the Sink assignment is when I finally realized how negative space works and how it helps you put a picture together.
For my Under the Sink assignment, I drew pots and pans instead of the regular cleaning supplies. My mother stores pots under her sink and has all my life. It was quite amusing to compare my assignment to other classmates since I was the only one with pots and pans in my work. I think the size at what I drew the still life can compare to the actual size. It’s pretty large. I also used only charcoal pencils for this piece.
Building up to this final project, I did a few other pieces for practice.
This is the very first negative space sketch I attempted. Drawing the space between the stool was my favourite part.
This is the second one. From my view, I mostly got animals. I zoomed in quite a bit though, which is what I dislike about it.
I’m not sure which number this one is, seeing as I did multiple sketches by this time. I was kinda’ surprised about how much I drew and still able to add in even when I had finished.
