Rebecca Miller as part of the architectural industry, writes about Emory University and possible designs for improvement in an article for the Design Institute. The article talks about the redesigning of three libraries: Atlanta Fulton Central Library, Live Oak Public Library, and Emory University Library. The libraries are being redesigned so that their space is more adequately used. However, the article focuses more on the redesigning of Emory’s library. There are several steps that are being taken to redesign the library, “[t]he first project aims to expand the Manuscripts, Archives, and Rare Book Library (MARBL) as it waits for a new building after the economic downturn” (refer to fig. 1). Through expanding the resources available students will be able to conduct more detailed research. “The second reinvention involves pulling two service points–the reference desk and the circulation desk–into one.” By combining both desk it is believed that the library will function more efficiently since both desk will be working together. In order to carry out this plan a sort of committee has been formed, with many members putting in their input as to how the plan for redesign should be executed. While the article does a good job at explaining the renovations that want to be done, it is important to note that it is a bit biased. The article basically just talks about expanding, and it does not mention the reason why a redesign is wanted. Is there a problem with how the library is being ran right now, or do students use the library less? The ideal intended audience would be students, faculty, and staff of Emory University because they are familiar with the library so they would be able to give their feedback on whether the purposes of redesign are adequate.
