Prince

(June 7, 1958~April 21, 2016)

Early Life

Prince Rogers Nelson was born on June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis to Mattie Della (jazz singer) and John Lewis (pianist and songwriter). Prince got his name from his father who’s stage name was “Prince Rogers”. Prince also suffered epileptic seizures as a young child, but eventually stopped having seizures. When Prince was 10, his parents split, so he was stuck switching between both his father’s house and his mother and new husband’s house. In high school, Prince played football, basketball, baseball, and already knew how to play several instruments.  (Later he will be known to play 27 instruments).

Career

In 1975, Prince, his cousin’s husband, and other locals began to record tracks, with Prince of course playing guitar. In 1976, Prince recorded his first solo demo tape, but his producer, Chris Moon, couldn’t seal a record deal.  Prince later signed with Warner Bros, giving them full creative control and ownership of publishing rights. He released his first album, “For You”, where he wrote, composed, arranged and played 27 instruments. He later formed his own band, The Time, selling four albums with them. The lead vocalist was actually Morris Day, with Prince playing most of the instruments. It wasn’t until the album Camille, where Prince really turned into….Prince, with all the personality, singing, and hitting high, falsetto notes. His career shot up from there. Prince wanted to release his music slowly, but Warner Bros disagreed, so Prince broke off with them, and had to change his stage name to a symbol :

He had to do this because the name: Prince was already taken and owned by Warner Bros. He began releasing his content quickly in order to complete all obligations with Warner Bros. He later signed with Arista Records and changed his stage name back to Prince.

Personal Life

Prince reportedly has been romantically involved with many celebrities, including Kim BasingerMadonna, and Carmen Electra, but in 1985, he was engaged to Susannah Melvoin, but they broke up before the wedding. In 1996 on Valentine’s Day, a 37 year old Prince married his 22-year-younger backup singer and foster child, Mayte Garcia, and they had a son 8 months later. Their son was born with Pfeiffer syndrome and died 6 days later. The pained couple divorced in 2006.
