What is Art? Art is a human expression that conveys emotion.

I personally define art as anything that makes you feel something. Such as when you look at a painting it makes you wonder and,  transports you into the artist frame of mind. I view machinery as art. It makes me wonder why the designer did what they did. While I view finger painting in museums as not being art because, I feel they lack intent.

This motorcycle is art because every piece was created with intent to convey power. The designer could have left the clutch cover without a pattern but they did not. It was created for people to enjoy and make them feel emotion.

To qualify as art for this class a piece must convey feeling and transform the ordinary, by adding human flare to make it unordinary.

My definition differs from the courses definition because that is art. What I see nothing in, someone else may see it representing some great explanation of the universe. Where I see a motorcycle as art some just see a loud means of transportation.

Beauty plays greatly in to what art is. If I don’t find beauty in something I rarely pay any attention to it as art.

5 Thoughts.

  1. I disagree. I think your personal reflection and definition does actually align with the course content’s definition of what art it. The motorcycle’s parts are designed with intent to serve a function but the industrial designers that work with mechanical engineers to create the form also consider their aesthetic or visual appeal. This is why – like cars or shoes or phones – you see so much variation between models. By looking at (for example) what Botstein views as the qualifiers of art you can clearly place a motorcycle in each category. I do agree with your assessment, however, that not all people would view this bike in the same way that you do or would find it beautiful or even consider it to be “art” based on their own definition of art. By your own personal reflection though, the bike depicted does contribute toward the transformation of the ordinary to those who share your perspective of the subject.

  2. I love you page btw. : ) But I understood everything you said, Motorcycles can be used as a form of art in a way because it’s designed and people who genuinely love riding motorcycles may view them as art themselves. We have the same idea that what one may see as art another may see it as trash as well.

  3. Art can be found in many different forms. It does not lack intent. If it made it to paper, or a canvas, or a runway, or any physical, palpable, visual form, it took someone thinking it up, and intending for it to look a certain way, feel a certain way, or make a statement. Every art may not mean something to you, but no art is without meaning. Just because you do not consider something art, does not mean it is not art, and does not make it not qualify as art because you think differently.

  4. I like your approach to this blog post of taking a functional mechanical element and observing art within it. It’s amazing when you begin to look at the smaller details and realize where someone directed their attention to, in order to make a piece visually appealing.

  5. Very different page, but very cool at the same time. I love the ideas of motorcycles because that can be art and show how you are personally all at the same time.
