Week 14- update

This week, I dedicated significant effort to refining my website. Inspired by YouTube tutorials, I revisited the site with the intention of achieving a more standardized aesthetic. By analyzing the websites of my classmates, I gleaned valuable insights into creating a cohesive visual experience. My initial modifications focused on the banner. I opted to incorporate a declaration of my professional identity as a photographer. Subsequently, I revised the text within the “About Me” and “Portfolio” sections, aiming to cultivate a professional tone suitable for a freelance artist seeking collaborative opportunities. Further refinement involved a shift in the banner content. I replaced the generic website name with my own, establishing a more personal brand identity.

Throughout the week, my primary objective revolved around enhancing the visual layout. Specifically, I prioritized an “organic” and organized presentation of my portfolio. This involved restructuring the photography to reflect genre categories – a stark contrast to the previous social media and video listing format. Having revitalized the descriptions within the “About Me” and “Portfolio” sections, I proceeded to address the imagery. My goal was to showcase a broader spectrum of myself visually. Through experimentation, I found that I’m content with the current layout, yet I’m considering tweaking the color scheme in the upcoming week for added vibrancy. Moreover, I’ve been diligently crafting more comprehensive descriptions for each portfolio item. These descriptions now include details such as the specific camera and lens used, as well as insights into the lighting setup. I believe it’s crucial to convey my technical expertise and range to my audience effectively.

This week for my portfolio update, I focused on removing unnecessary text from my pages. I also drafted more creative headers or templates to enhance the visual appeal. To showcase my talents in a diverse way, I’m working on creating more text-based content for my page, including poems, screenplays, and more. Additionally, I’ve begun elaborating on the photos I’ve taken and plan to update their descriptions next week. I have also been asking for help from my sister who has coded with this site on templates to find something that fits the brand I want to curate. A lot of this week was spent doing research on my ideas to improve it over the weekend and next week. 

I spent some time this week researching different website templates. My goal is to make my portfolio website distinct from my blog. I’m looking for ways to achieve a uniform and professional look, similar to other high-quality websites I’ve encountered.

I carefully selected images from the recommended photo apps, ensuring they fit well within the designated space. However, I’m still on the lookout for more images that align with a professional portfolio. Additionally, I’m enhancing the descriptions under my “About Me” section to reflect a more professional tone. 

I’m currently contemplating the direction of my portfolio and website—whether to lean more towards writing or acting. I aim to showcase all my passions effectively on the platform. Now this week it felt simple and extremely helpful to compile the in-depth details of what is needed and how to organize. I really like expanding on prompts with detailed options of trying to elevate my resume and key tips to stand out in the current Atlanta entry level creative job scene. Now I feel more prepared and less scared of making the portfolio. At first it was so hard, now it feels like I am making it week by week. I looked for a radius of 100 miles and there was great spam from being an assistant researcher, teacher, social media marketing and much more. It was not the most relevant thing I found some opportunities that sparked my interest, looked for acting or history. I barely got results, so I stuck to entry level position on writing and editing. The next website I went to was LinkedIn which the results from searching up writing produced freelance positions, movie list writers, editorial positions, and teaching positions. Now to get into pay range it was a huge gap some entry levels give you 55,000 dollars yet no benefits or retirement plans. So, a lot of the entry positions for people with master’s degrees have a build your way up mentality. I found a lot of relevant opportunities, more internships are available than entry job opportunities but still a lot of viable sources especially for places that would pay relocation, bonuses, and all. This assignment helped me figure out that being specific with your search is beyond important to land a position! 

 

The job listings had common qualifications, responsibilities, and software expectations. The common ones I noticed were strong writing background, transcribing text, possess strong oral and written communication skills. The listings said to have strong interpersonal skills, be detail-oriented, effective team player, open availability, and creative mindset. These are some of the mandatory qualification’s employers consistently saying now for the software expectations it varied. Positions that were not freelance, and more office based like court reporter looked for proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, prophecy with computers and being able do input lots of data in short periods of time. The software qualifications for freelance writing or editing software using JavaScript, Graphic design skills, Experience using Finalsite Composer, Blackboard WCM, proficient in Microsoft Office, WordPress, Drupal, and Photoshop.  

When it comes to educational background for each position it was looking for a Bachelor graduate and a person with a master’s degree. The fields are looking for experience in Communications, marketing, and editor positions. The entry level positions are all looking for major experiences in the intended field which made it feel unattainable at first. Each place had similar responsibilities like to optimize engagement with users, to communicate effectively and ensure accuracy, relevance, and timeliness of incoming information lastly to full time with nighttime availability when it came to cooperative positions.

During my research process I learned that I need to gain more experience in the acting and writing process. I learned I need to gain internship experience in production and writing studio or news source. The things that were reinforced that I need are Microsoft certification, website creation, graphic design experience and creating a social media brand. I want to learn how to create my digital portfolio and learn how to write from screen and stage. This will help me gain experience and an internship for news or in the writing studio at Georgia state. This research taught me I need to become serious about acquiring my headshots, auditioning for more roles, and networking for connections. At this point I am a tad overwhelmed with all I need to accomplish to get to my goal, but I am excited to gain certifications and the ability to be more self-sufficient while creating my own brand. I think mapping it all out and seeing the possibilities through a lens of realism will help me plan on what I need to focus on.  

Week one- Career aspirations

Hello,  

My name is Michelle Viard, and I am a junior acting student at Georgia State university with a concentration in writing. I know already that I want to further my education and dive fully into performing arts. I plan to become a successful Sag actor and a screenwriter for network television or film. For me to be able to accomplish my aspirations I need to get a masters in English to help me improve my writing to a professional level.  This will help me create scripts like Issa Reas “Insecure”, my overall goal is to create shows and plays that highlight People of Color and tells the stories of those who are silenced. To accomplish this i plan to get an internship with the Humanities Inclusivity Program that is set up to help undergraduates with a mentorship program to have a chance to explore a career in their field. To get my first job after college I hope networking can help me climb up from background actor to set Production assistant and learn how to work my way up to screenwriting.  

Being a freelance screenwriter allows for me to work on multiple projects while having a simultaneously flexible schedule where I can also act like Micheala Coel has done with “Chewing Gum” and “I may destroy you”. This would help me finally write and be in stories that show more diverse perspectives. My masters in English also helps me with being a screenwriter because it would help me conduct research, develop characters and storylines. I do not know yet after screenwriting if I want to completely dive into stage writing or maybe go back from a second master’s in public history. This course would help me discover all the possibilities and see one career path through fully.
