What are your feelings towards remodeling projects?

  • Prefer remodel, Love it because it is a challenge
  • Need to think about the problem, get engineers involved
  • Finished, master bath and realized the floor system did not support the work load
  • Need to decide which battles to pick and which items not to do

What is the hardest thing about planning and envisioning a remodel?

  • Seeing it (remodel) was the biggest problem
  • Everything was raw until the end

Why was this hard?

  • Sees self as a creative
  • Enjoys reconfiguring wall
  • Sketch on notepad
  • Architect would charge $1,200 -$1,500 to draw it in AutoCAD
  • Have a unique relationship with Architect, they basically digitize what I want
  • Liked maximizing the space
  • Needed to see kitchen within 2-3 steps of the front door
  • Kitchen creates excitement 
  • Black is in
  • Backsplash is touchy (subjective) area

What if anything have you done to overcome this problem?

  • Went to Pinterest for inspiration
  • Found White shaker cabinets and gray countertop to be very neutral
  • Investor/Customer Amy
  • Referred her to him because of his expertise and design suggestions. He has about 70 cumulative years of tile experience
  • Look up homes that sold in the last month on Zillow
  • What was in the kitchen, bath, etc.
  • Worked at a firm with designers
  • Sent him 30-40 slide deck with finishes
  • Where is the burden (homeowner, designer, contractor)?
  • Have drop dead dates for all finishes to be selected, ensured project move according to plan
  • Know what works through trial and error. Since he works on his own projects then sells them he has liberty to pick whatever he wants
  • Majority are comfortable in neutral trends.
