Project 1: Compassion Posters

Turtle Crossing Awareness

Date Completed: September 30, 2022

Medium: Collage, Acrylic Paint, Photoshop

The goal of this assignment was to create two posters promoting the value of compassion – in other words, public service announcements. As a part of the planning process, I had to consider what exactly compassion means to me, as well as what issues I personally feel are important and worth raising awareness for.

I chose to make these posters to help raise awareness surrounding the issue of turtle roadway fatalities. I have recently seen several dead turtles in the road that have fallen victim to car strikes, and I figured that this project would be the perfect way to take action to help the turtles. I interviewed Kathryn Dudeck at the Chattahoochee Nature Center to gain more information about roadway fatalities, as well as wildlife rehabilitation in general.

I wanted to utilize color as a way to bring harmony to the pieces, so for the first poster, I went with a triadic color scheme, and for the second poster, I went with a tetradic color scheme. After creating the collages on paper with a variety of different materials, including cloth, aluminum foil, decorative moss, and acrylic paint, I photographed them and edited them in Photoshop, adding the text as well as the pastel-colored backdrop. All in all, I’m thrilled with the way these turned out, and I think they do a great job at grabbing the viewer’s attention.
