A Quarantined Piggy Bank

In my Three-Dimensional Design class, we were tasked with creating a sculpture that represented our time in quarantine. For my sculpture, I made a piggy bank with air-dry clay, food coloring, acrylic paint, corn starch, and pastels. During quarantine, many people are staying at home, and feeling very trapped. Others that have to go to work also feel trapped there, risking their health and safety. For the people at home, many have lost jobs or have seen a decrease in wages, so they’re relying on their savings to get them through this. I chose to represent this by having a hog-tied piggy bank.

While at home, I’ve been doing different arts and crafts with my family. One of those was making a Play-Doh-type material out of cornstarch and conditioner, so I used cornstarch on the outside because it has to do with what I, personally, have been doing during the quarantine. Unfortunately, after drying, the clay cracked a lot and messed up both the pig and the rope, and though I couldn’t do anything to help the rope, covering the pig with cornstarch covered those cracks. Piggy banks are usually for children, so I still decided to make it cute. I gave it a bow, eyelashes, and blush and the cornstarch gave it a fuzzy-looking texture.
