Three Drawings

For this assignment, we were given this prompt in the context of imagining ourselves as a superhero, and trying to incorporate these three images into that narrative. We were given supplies we all needed to try, and also given the parameters of creating a one-point and two-point perspective drawing, as well as a drawing using atmospheric perspective. We focused on creating compelling spaces grounded in reality – while not realism, it follows the general rules of the real world. By playing with these materials and ideas in connection to another project, it encouraged us to step out of our comfort zones and create something many of us may have not tried before.

corner scene in color pencil
For this piece, I wanted to capture a moody, high-contrast street scene with only a few colors, so I opted to try out the coloured pencils here. I have the most experience with colored pencils as opposed to any other medium I was meant to try, so I felt a bit better about this one. The two-point perspective was tricky, but I got it!

fountain scene in ink
For this drawing, I wanted to play with the inks to capture an organic, natural scene. This piece is my atmospheric perspective one! I actually had a lot of fun drawing this piece – and it even encouraged me to play even more with ink in a way I hadn’t considered before. I now adore using ink for my traditional art.

watercolor scene
For this drawing, I wanted to do a fun, childlike scene of an art nouveau restaurant. I struggled with the watercolor pencil since I wasn’t used to the medium, but I made it work! I had fun figuring out the space and the one-point perspective, too.

I feel as if this project opened me up to a great deal of new techniques and mediums I wouldn’t normally choose – so it pushed me to try new things! I’m grateful I did, since I discovered new mediums and techniques I wouldn’t have otherwise played with.
