Where is the Wealth?

wealth-distribution

“We equate wealth with “net worth,” the sum total of your assets minus liabilities” – http://inequality.org/wealth-inequality/

With many of us living pay check to paycheck and living off of minimum wage, we do not have any wealth.

it may also cost more to be poor then it is to have access to large sums of money and resources. If you do not consistently  have proper access to medical care, due to being unable to pay for medical insurance then paying for each doctor visit and for prescription drugs does add up.

Without enough money to pay for a more well rounded education you would be unable to acquire any transferable work skills or take the classes necessary to land you a higher paying job.

this obvious difference in income makes “making it” in america close to impossible. Then if your a person of color well the affects are almost catastrophic, there may be no real way to make it on a $20,000 dollar income and without the proper resources you may never earn more then your parents.

which is why is problem needs to be addressed. America is one of the wealthiest countries in the world offers no assistance for citizens living below the poverty line.

Prisons are no longer helping

2fbcef9The prison system is no longer effective.

prisons have recently just become holding cells for individuals that society is unsure of how to deal with or how to help. They are no longer places where individuals receive help or are given counseling. Inmates are simply held for a specified amount of time and allowed to re-join society without having reconsidered their actions. What makes this worse is that prisons profit from having as many people fill up their bed as possible; this makes them happy to see inmates coming in and coming back.

US-prison-systemPrisons now benefit from having as many inmates in their system as possible. This creates a culture where having repeat offenders is almost desirable. There is no real attempt made to help prisoners

compared to the rest of the world we (disproportionately) imprison more people and according to the Huffington Post we all may know someone who has been incarcerated.

“The International Center for Prison Studies estimates that America imprisons 716 people per 100,000 citizens (of any age). That compares (unfavorably) with Russia (484), China (121) and Iran (284). Over 2.5 million American children have a                                                                                           parent behind bars.”

at this point the prison system has become a for profit organization that is putting far to much money in the pockets of elected officials and lobbyist, their is no clear way of reforming the the way we deal with criminals and with individuals that need legitimate help. Like I said the system now runs like a business and so many companies are finding ways to cut costs and increase profit. Food spending limits have been cut, they have cut how much money should be allocated for healthcare per prisoner, and prisons hire under qualified staff to keep wages low.

FACTS: http://www.naacp.org/pages/criminal-justice-fact-sheet

  • Prison has not been proven as a rehabilitation for behavior, as two-thirds of prisoners will re-offend
  • Today, the US is 5% of the World population and has 25% of world prisoners.
  • African Americans are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of whites
  • From 1980 to 2008, the number of people incarcerated in America quadrupled-from roughly 500,000 to 2.3 million people

Men in Abusive relationships

Abel_REPORTER_Nick-767x1024shutterstock_111253091

Contrary to popular belief men can find themselves in verbally, psychologically, and physically abusive relationships. When put in these situations most men do not say anything to their friends and families because they fear it may threaten and relinquish their masculinity.

The idea that your wife/girlfriend will be angry if yournot home from work by a certain time has been around for decades, and if your not there then you may have to deal with this

woman_yelling_at_man_325x216

and according to the National domestic violence hot line the number of men reporting abuse is so low that they are unsure as to how many men are in a abusive relationship. at the moment 1 in 10 men (10%) in the US have experienced rape, physical violence and/or stalking by a partner and report a related impact on their functioning.

most men do not report any form of abuse because they feel like the treatment is normal, can legitimately have strong feelings for the other individual, but the reality of the situation is that by the time  a couple moves in together they are already financially dependent on each other. neither of them can just get up and leave within first considering their bills, and men do not report their partner or feel the need to saying anything because they could be living in fear, denial of the situation, love their partner or have a career that puts them away from their home for long hours.

Men seem to fly under the radar when it comes to admitting abuse but the issue is very real and should not be taken as a joke or seen as a norm.

Being Poor and Hungry in America

Being poor in America is a very large issue that goes over looked simply because people imagine life here to be the best. However that is not the truth, there are millions of people that live in the United States with jobs and homes that are both poor and hungry.

We are constantly bombarded with images of other countries

No.-19-Nepal-copy m3494jgnvzipl5udsyo2

these are two photos of Brazil, were the difference in equality is very obvious

but when placed to images of the slums here in America we can hardly tell the difference

americans-poverty poverty-in-america homeless_0406 (1)Brownsville-e1380735882552

The Image in the bottom right almost looks like a giant prison, why would anyone want to live there

we have to face the reality that hunger and poverty do exist within the The U.S, that it is possible to have a consistent source of income, a home and rights but still live in poverty.

Eating choices are not always intentional.

Free will (agency) has a lot to do with the choices we make on a daily bases but when we are bombarded with fast food advertisements like the one below it becomes very difficult to just say no, especially when your hungry.

kate-upton-carl-jr  David-Beckham-BURGER-KING®-Commercial

People see images like these and believe its sexy to make bad lunch decision, when of course we know that eating fast food can have a very negative affect on your body and mind. With companies constantly giving us images of food they want us to eat it becomes a bit difficult to determine if your eating their products out of your own free will or not.

katherine-webb-carl-jr                                              5849982_orig

again companies are showing us images like the one above and the next to persuade us that its OK to harm your body with their food. Thats its even in your best interest to eat their food. The subway commercial tries to make us feel better for eating their food (which is till unhealthy) by telling us that if Jared can lose weight eating their food so can you. That however is not the case for every person that eats out everyday.

now imagine if the media began putting warning labels like next to the food items their advertiseing or placing health oriented commercial next to fast food advertisements.

Health-and-Medical-Facts-fastfood  image

Now seeing images like these would really make you second guess what exactly it is that your putting into your body. The harmful affect of fast food can be really only be matched by the over consumption of tobacco products that have gone viral all over the country. Both are potentially deadly and yet companies make it a point to try and sell products that they know cause physical harm. Buying the box of fries or the box of newports is forced on you every time you turn your t.v. on, look at a billboard or simply checking your mail box.

On Nickel and Dimed and being poor in America

1798042

I respect Barbaras Ehrenreichs attempt to survive month to month on minimum wage but I can not shake the feeling that she may have been poking fun at the poor. She may not have intentionally tried to sound sarcastic and bit undermining but that is the impression I received from the book. She, unlike most American already had a good foundation to begin her experiment on. She already had a car, she most likely had enough money saved up to ensure that she will not starve or be homeless. Apart from all that she knew that what she was doing was simply imaginary, she could go back to her life and forget what being poor was ever like. She did make it very clear that no one can realistically move up in the world if their immediate source of income comes from minimum wage paying jobs. These people do not move up because they do not want to but because it is impossible to earn enough money or move up in a company that pays you $7.25 dollars an hour.

I did notice that she did admit that there were neighborhoods or cities that she was generally trying to avoid out of fear or because she knew she could not find a job in that area. Well unfortunately when you do not make enough money and do not have the luxury of options you always have to choose the cheapest option.  I also noticed that she phoned a few friends and used her credit card when she thought she might have been getting sick. She broke two of her rules when she did that, one to not use any outside forces to help her and not to tap into her credit card.

Apart from all of the assuming she did about what is would be like to be poor I do respect her experiment. However she already had many advantages that many people would only dream of. She was already in good mental and physical health. This is an advantage that should not be taken lightly, most people in the working class have been working there entire lives and when something bothers them they have to “work through” as one of her minimum wage supervisors mentioned. She was confident that she would find a job, a place to live and something to eat. However that is not the case for most blue collar workers, most working class citizens there is this feeling of being less then the person that makes more money then you and you always feel a bit inferior. This inferiority complex is perpetuated throughout your life and when its time for you to go out there and find a job and a home you just settle and lack motivation to make economically.

I did find it a bit amusing that she told a few of her fellow employers who she really was and what she was actually doing. To her surprise they did not care about her book or her social experiment. Why would they? they have their own lives to worry about. I find it a best dis tasteful that she expected a different reaction or perhaps even praise for what she was doing. Like I said I did enjoy her research but it felt like she was playing a poor person in a play and attempted to glorify a situation that we should attempt to get everyone out of.
