Fish Climbing Trees

I was scrolling through Facebook and noticed this becoming widely popular. I watched it and thought that it was very interesting and, honestly, thought I would run through it with you guys. This is more of my opinion on the video but I would love to hear y’all express yours in the comments.

Notice how this picture of a modern school system seems more real. We are getting to this point, and the benefits are amazing.

(0:01): He opens with a quote from Einstein that is very powerful. Nobody is dumb, we are all just different and a “genius” in our own ways. Some are better at the arts and some are better at STEM. Its all about individuality. One thing that I think is important is the capability of the school system to let students experience new things. There is art, music, science, math, and social studies, all of them giving students the ability to find interests and eventually develop that interest in later careers.

(1:00): This right here is interesting and true, but not entirely. I disagree somewhat with his argument. When presenting the picture of the classroom he neglects to recognize the modern changes that are ever occurring. Imagine new spaces used to promote intellectual thinking, such as “The Curve” here a Georgia State. Think about computer labs, iCollege, MyEclass, Khan Academy, and even Microsoft Word that are bringing in new forms of media and new ways of learning. Yes, we might have the same classroom model as before, but are we really still really learning the same way as before. There are now online classes, YouTube videos, and study plans that have boosted intellect exponentially. To just say that we have the same class setup means that we have the same education is wrong.

(3:35): I agree with the idea that standardized testing is one of the worst things invented. This was a big reason I could not side with Bernie, because he believes in this educational format. In order to have a little fun, I wanted to be the devils advocate. He brings up competition and how it is horrible, but is it really that bad?I know I know, maybe competition isn’t the only thing but it is important. Without drive, a student can fall behind and exude no real effort. I think that people get too caught up in the idea of the “no grading” system and forget that students, in real life, are going to be competing with fellow co-workers and will have competition to see who gets to be promoted. To exclude all competition creates a false reality for the real world because students are going to be graded, even if it is not on paper. I think that as long as it is healthy, then it is fair competition.

(4:35):Finland is ranked the best in the world for education. I watched a video in relation that shows how Finland got that way, and one big reason is that there are only universities that offer the programs to become a teacher. Maybe teachers are respected more because it is so difficult to get in. Here is a video explaining such.
