About the Project: The goal of this project was to make 8 sculptures out of 8 sheets of regular printer paper, producing one sculpture per sheet. We were encouraged to experiment and treat the paper a myriad of ways (including cutting, tearing, soaking, or folding it) to see what we could do with such a simple/limited material. Upon completing the sculptures, we created sketchbook layouts to display at least one photo of each sculpture alongside notes about our creative process.
Medium: Paper, Glue.
Process: I began this project by brainstorming ideas, trying to imagine what would look good rendered in paper and be fairly practical to attempt, then I drew concept art for the ideas I wanted to tackle. The first sculpture I made, Haunted Heart, utilized a mix of cutting, tearing, and wetting paper. This one was really me trying to get a feel for the paper and how it could be manipulated. The sculptures that followed tended to lean more on cutting (I was getting good at using the x-acto knife) although Still Shining was made by molding soaked paper around an actual flashlight. I decided not to adhere to concept art while making Dear to Me, Flower Fairy, and the Sunflower Witch Hat, opting to go with the flow of the creative process instead.
