New Media Colleague Review

Charlene’s Video on “Atlanta Produces the Best Music”. Charlene’s video’s title immediately informs the viewer of what her topic is and what her stance on this topic is. Her video begins by showing video footage from the Atlanta based girl group TLC. This introduction utilizing a famous musical group of women from Atlanta shows that our city has not only unique style, but also has a place for women to be highly successful within the industry. The video goes on showing video clips of various artists. Charlene’s main rhetoric is to state the logical fact that all of these artist are widely acclaimed, successful, and have won numerous awards. The video’s audience is really anyone who is interested in music or Atlanta, but particularly Atlantans. My one complaint with this video is that it can be somewhat difficult to read the text, other than that, great video!

Karlie’s Video is titled “Gang, Gun, and Drug Abuse ATL VIDEO”. The video begins its presentation with clear lettering. Karlie quickly introduces a statistic about crime in Atlanta, utilizing pathos and establishing some ethos for her video. The stats that are thrown out there are truly concerning, thus taking advantage of pathos. This pathos really hits home with people like myself who live in Atlanta. Karlie interviews a former drug user who she personally knows. This is a really effective rhetorical device, it puts a human face to the statistics. The topics that are focused upon in the video are the astounding number of gangs in Atlanta and the crime and danger that they create, the abundance of firearms due to Georgia’s conservative legislation, and the impact of drug use on real humans. Karlie really knocks the ball out of the park by mentioning a close friend of hers who died due to drug use. This is an astounding video chock full of powerful rhetoric.

Leo’s video on Homelessness in Atlanta. The video starts up with footage of Atlanta and driving around while some sad music plays. Here we can see Leo’s own words about how he has privilege and opportunity within his life. Pathos is being used in the contrast between the visual of Leo’s own home and life followed by video of people who have nothing beside the clothes on their backs, you can see their sadness. He makes a relation between homelessness and a cyclical cycle of poverty for some people. The video is pretty much based on a complete appeal using pathos. This pathos make us who live in Atlanta think about and realize the others who are suffering around us and that there is hope and people can help. One thing that would have mad the video much more powerful is if Leo had interviewed a homeless man. It would not have had been difficult, as he pointed out, they are all around us. Other than that, great, moving video.
