What is Grit?

What is Grit?

Grit is defined as a combination of passion and perseverance sustained over time. This concept is represented by the equations talent multiplied by effort equals skill, and skill multiplied by effort equals achievement. Grit is considered a psychological attribute involving the summoning of passion and perseverance for long-term goals. It reflects a person’s ability to persist, driven by a strong will, even in the face of challenges. Individuals with grit not only achieve high levels of success but also continuously strive for improvement, showcasing enduring interest and intense determination in pursuing long-term goals. This psychological attribute involves concentrated effort and resilience, with individuals rarely giving in to surrender or failure.

Where does grit come from?

So, does everyone have girt? How can I know if I have grit in me? The source of grit can come from a lot of different places. For some people, depending on their backgrounds they might have grit because of the way they were raised. Some parents try to teach the concept of grit to their kids at a young age so that they have it while growing up. Some people say that grit can be a genetic thing but that does not mean if you do not have the grit gene you cannot develop it. However, there are four psychological assets to which we can trace the origins of grit, which can explain where grit really comes from.

Origins of grit:

  1. Interest: In order to be gritty about something, you have to be interested in it. Having grit means that you are going to keep pushing and trying even if you fail. The only way for someone to be able to continue after failures is if they were really interested and passionate about what they are doing.
  2. Practice: You have to have the capacity to deliberately practice over and over again. Practicing deliberately is also a habit that one must develop in order to even get to the point of grit.
  3. Purpose: whatever it is you want to develop grit in must give you a sense of purpose. People that have a higher sense of purpose tend to have more grit in them. When someone feels like they are helping others by making an impact it will inspire them to do more everyday.
  4. Hope: it is important to think positively and be patient with yourself. Developing grit can take time but that is what grit is all about. Trying over and over again until you can get it.
