The environment and our contributions toward it, is a popular choice for CSR. Companies of all sizes create large impacts on our environment so it is important that they practice sustainability to reduce their carbon footprint. As consumers lean more into products and practices that are safer for the environment, companies need to follow suit in order to continue their profitability. Consumers are more likely to buy something or use a product that advertises its safety for the environment rather than a product that is harmful for the environment. This may have not been true decades ago, but the world is changing and the way society thinks is very different from that of 30-40 years ago. It can be observed that, from a report made by Nielson in 2019, 81% of consumers said it is “extremely” important that companies practice environmental responsibility. As well as, 30% consumers said they would be willing to seek out or pay more for sustainable products. 90% of millennials and Generation Z believe that companies “must” advocate for the environment and control their carbon footprint. Science is continuously proving that human actions are detrimentally harming the environment, so any practice that can limit our carbon footprint is critical.
Companies like IKEA, use only sustainable materials for their products as well as, setting a goal for 2034 to use only recycled materials.
Patagonia heavily advocates and practices environmental responsibility. They are transparent in their mission for a cleaner environment by incorporating their environmental goals in their logo and on their website. They also donate 1% of their sales to conserving the environment. Patagonia also founded Patagonia Action Works, which helps connect their consumers to local activist groups in their societies.
Seventh Generation has also been advocating for environmental responsibility since its creation. In their mission statement, they state clearly that their goal is to transform the world into a sustainable and healthy place for the next seven generations. They not only practice sustainability with their water based cleaning products, but also in regards to shipping and handling.
