There are many ways that a multi-generational workplace could have an impact on the work environment. Interestingly, how it impacts the workplace depends on who you ask. Some believe that perception causes more effect than anything else. Due to the many stereotypes about older and younger workers, people may go into the workplace with preconceived notions about their coworkers. This could cause a very divisive work environment and unnecessary tension. It seems to be a myth that actual generations need to be managed in the workplace, but rather it is the perceptions of generations that need to be managed.
There seems to be an unfair bias against the younger generation of workers when the reality is that they are not disrupting the workplace the way people assume that they are because of stereotypes. People don’t seem to realize that generational beliefs have remained consistent throughout history, meaning that the older generations had the same beliefs, tendencies, and behaviors that the generations before them had when they were the same age. Throughout the years it seems that all young people behave the same and mature as they get older. As the older generation has grown out of these tendencies, they look down on the younger generation for the same behavior.
Research has shown that the behavior of the different age groups in the workplace is not as drastically different as people have been led to believe. This is something people should consider. If they understand that the generalizations, they have been fed are untrue, then that would lead to a more cohesive work environment with more trust between each other. It could also improve the overall bonding of the work environment if everyone does not feel so different from one another. The multigenerational workplace can leave people feeling super estranged from their coworkers which makes work a more uncomfortable place to be.
It is also important to be aware of because some of the talk about generations in the workplace can lead to generationalism, which can be described as “modern ageism” Generationalism is sanctioned ambivalence and socially acceptable prejudice toward people of certain ages. This is important to be mindful of because it can lead to decisions being made on an institutional level which can be quite harmful and hurtful.
