How to Use VUCA in the Workplace
In the current business landscape things are always rapidly changing, so adaptability in leadership models is critical in generating success. Companies have recognized that there is a need for a shift in the leadership strategies used to better navigate the challenges of the VUCA environment. The next generation to enter the workforce is Generation Z, whose influence on the business landscape continues to grow. With them, they bring a preference for technology, hands-on projects, and a desire to have their ideas and opinions valued. A study was conducted focusing on the leadership competence of Generation Z in a VUCA environment. The study was conducted using an unstructured questionnaire with 260 participants. The research explores the dependence on VUCA skill sets, with entrepreneurial, operational, architectural, and enabling used as independent variables.
The VUCA environment demands leaders and managers with flexibility, foresight, and adaptive thinking skills. The study identified four modern leadership styles that are deemed essential for success in the VUCA environment: entrepreneurial leadership, operational leadership, architectural leadership, and enabling leadership. The research done in the study highlights how important it is to have proactive leadership that is tailored to address all of the components of VUCA. By honing these leadership skills individuals can thrive in a VUCA environment and turn obstacles into opportunities and reduce risk. Through the study it is shown that these skills are indeed found in Generation Z, the role of mentoring Generation Z was highlighted, emphasizing the importance of empathy, involvement, and metacognition when doing so.
