Here we will be discussing grit and how it incorporates into the workplace and in our day-to-day lives:

What is the topic?

The combination of passion and perseverance for very long-term goals.

Grit is a basic attribute because it may just be the one skill without which failure is pretty much assured. In other words, it’s possible to succeed in the workplace or as an entrepreneur if you’re not creative, collaborative, adaptive, or flexible as these skills can often be worked around. Grit is the resilience and strength of heart to overcome obstacles and discover opportunities even in the hardest of troubles.

Grit is the inner fortitude that makes a champion”- Robert Jerus, Writer of article, “12 Qualities of True Grit.”

Qualities of Grit:

  • Passion
  • Perseverance
  • Courage
  • Resilience
  • Optimism
  • Endurance
  • Self-Confidence
  • Conscientiousness

Why Is Grit Essential To The Workplace?

Grit is essential to the workplace because the benefits of using Grit with employees will improve confidence in the workplace. Building confidence will help change the mindset of an employee. Another benefit of Grit is using mistakes as learning lessons, applying this will help move past challenges and prevent mistakes from happening again.

How Can I Use This In My Job?

Using Grit while in a workplace is being aware that it takes hard work to succeed. You can apply Grit in the workplace.

  • Pursue your passions, our passions are usually something we still struggle with but which motivate and inspire us to get better at. The problems and adversity that we may face are the same as those in other activities. However, the procedure is rewarding in and of itself.
  • Practice,  in order to accomplish anything you must keep trying at the things you are not great at.
  • Focus on improvement rather than perfection, being a perfectionist is not necessary in order to achieve success in work. Instead, striving for excellence entails completing things at work to the best of our abilities. It also entails making an effort to enhance our performance over time by developing self-monitoring routines.

For if we think of genius as something magical, we are not obliged to compare ourselves and find ourselves lacking…” In fact, when it comes to how we fare in the marathon of life, it’s effort that trumps everything else.

Grit in the workplace

We see grit in all different forms in the workplace but identifying if you have it determines your ability to overcome challenges as well as being able to persevere in the long-run

  • Set goals for yourself, one’s easy to achieve first
  • Persevering through difficult challenges
  • Using failure to grow
  • Focus on improvement instead of perfection

The Downsides of Using Grit in the Workplace

  • Refusal to give up on something – people who display grit can become too focused on getting something done a specific way/perfecting it
  • Grit could do more harm than good (especially when it comes to children)
  • It cannot be taught, you have to be the one to make it happen
  • Long-term goals need to be in place in order for it to be effective

Habits to achieve this way of thinking – day to day & long-term

Grit comes down to the habits you practice and build daily. It is important to find a couple and stick to them. Below are a couple of habits to add to your daily routine in order to achieve a successful way of thinking.

Day to day:

  • Find the positive in your daily setbacks.
  • Wake up and write 3 things you want to achieve that day, whether it be something small like making the bed or something big.
  • Bring yourself out of your comfort zone. Become comfortable with being uncomfortable.
  • Discover your interest. – if you’re stuck doing stuff that doesn’t motivate you, you’ll never be successful.
  • Practice optimistic self-talk
  • Hang with gritty people. – in other words, hang with people who want the same things you do.

Long-term:

  • At the beginning of the year create a timeline of goals you want to achieve in the next 12 months that will bring you closer to who you strive to be.
  • Master a skill to become successful and happy at work.
  • Remind yourself of your purpose daily. What is your life goal?
  • Work with intention every day
  • Break your long-term goals into short-term (daily).

A Quote About Grit

“Grit is passion or perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in and day out — not just for a day, not just for a month, but for years — to make that future a reality”.  – Anglea Duckworth

  • In order to achieve our goals in life we need to persist and persevere or stick to our objectives. There will always be days when we want to quit, but by pushing on, even when we feel like throwing in the towel, we will become stronger. When facing any adversities we always need to dig a little deeper in order to realize our goals and stay inspired so as to maintain the necessary energy to keep us going.

Do I Have What It Takes?

  • To cultivate grit, it is important to develop goals that will spark your passion. Set quality goals that will make you proud of yourself.
  • We can develop our own levels of GRIT and apply it to creating results that really matter for both our private and professional life.
  • However, we need to learn the art of perseverance and make a commitment to ourselves, away from depression, low results, and performance.
  • When experiencing difficult situations, one needs to stay focused on one’s goal. This could mean sacrificing one’s leisure time to engage in goal-related tasks, such as dedicating a few hours a week to ensure that the tasks are completed. This could mean reducing the number of hours checking social media, playing games, or watching Netflix, and replacing those hours with goal-related tasks.

Example of Grit in Real Life

  1. You are in your first year on a gymnastics team, and you are learning about the sport. Every time you attend a competition, you lose. Rather than quit, you return to every practice and go to the next competition.
  2. You have never been a good artist. Your idea of drawing a person is a stick figure. Determined to learn how to draw a life-like person, you take classes at a local art school. After a few months of consistent drawing, you can create a self-portrait.
  3. You are learning a difficult piece of music. It has complicated finger movements, and you are considered an “average” musician by your instructors. Many of your peers perform with more grace and confidence than you. Instead of giving up, you practice daily. You are deliberate in your efforts. Over several weeks, your finger movements become increasingly fluid as you practice.

How Can I Grow My Grit?

Grit starts from within. It’s not something we are born with or something that is unachievable, but something that we can all strive to be. It starts with a growth mindset, if you’re not open to learning and growing then you will never be in the position you want to be in. You may not have the natural ability to do something but it’s always possible to build.

There are several strategies that you can use to grow your grit:

  1. Develop a growth mindset: Instead of seeing failure as a sign of incompetence, view it as a learning opportunity. By embracing challenges and persisting through setbacks, you can build your resilience and grit.
  2. Set clear goals: Having clear, achievable goals can help you stay focused and motivated, even in the face of obstacles. Break your goals down into smaller steps, and track your progress along the way.
  3. Practice deliberate practice: Rather than mindlessly going through the motions, engage in deliberate practice, which involves setting specific goals, getting feedback, and pushing yourself to improve in small increments.
  4. Build supportive relationships: Surround yourself with people who will support and encourage you. This can include friends, family members, mentors, and coaches.
  5. Cultivate gratitude: Focusing on the things that you are grateful for can help you maintain a positive attitude and stay motivated.
  6. Take care of yourself: Make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and engaging in regular exercise. Self-care is important for building resilience and maintaining your energy and motivation.
